Speak 2

1. Discuss Melinda's decline, including physical symptoms.
She is cutting herself and her attitude is horrible.

2. Analyze the social studies "debate" and its aftermath. Note who challenges the teacher and the position each person takes. How do you feel about this type of debate? Is the teacher right or wrong? Do students have a right to challenge a teacher?
Ithink that teacher should listene to each individual because everyone has a right to ay what they think. In this situation the teacher is wrong. Yes the students do.

3. Who is a "real" American? What do you think of Mr.Neck's opinion? Going by his definition, are some of you not really Americans?
To be honest with you I don't know how to answer this question.

4. Discuss the Thanksgiving dinner for Melinda's family and why this is significant.
They don't sit and eat. Her dad went out back and put something on the grill.

5. Analyze Melinda's statement about her parents, "I bet they'd be divorced by now if I hadn't been born." What does this reflect about herself esteem?
That her parents really do not like each other and that she is the only reason why they are sticking together.

6. Examine Melinda's references to her secret and what this reveals about her relationship with her parents. What do you think happened at the party?

7. Discuss Melinda's atheletic ability, her attitude toward being on the basketball team, and the comparison she makes between basketball and life.
She is good at shooting free throws, and when the coach ask her to be on the basketball team she says no. She doesn't want to be on the basketball team because she has better things to do.

8. Analyze the deterioration of the relationship between Melinda and Heather. Why is it that people sometimes like us more when they can get something out of us? Are the Marthas good friends to Heather? Why or why not?
They are not really friends, they are more like associates. They do that because they get what we cant do from us. I really wouldn't say that because they are just around because they want what she can get for them.

9. What should we value in other people? What qualities are important in a person? What do you usually notice first about people? Does that really matter?
If they are there to really be your friend or not. You should look to see if they nice, a cool person to hang around, and to see if they are there for you when you are in need. The way they act. Sometimes it does really matter, depends on how they act.

10. Examine Melinda's reference to IT. Pages 85-86 & 89-90.
He is nasty and she does not like him at all.

11. Discuss the school conference with Melinda's parents and the aftermath. What do you think about Melinda's suicide attempt? Was it real? What does it indicate? What do you think about her mother's reaction?
Her mother and father came up to the school because she was caught skipping and she has to see the counselor. That she is depressed. I think it was real the way she was describing it. That she needs help. That her mother wants to get her help.

Speak 1

1. Analyze Melinda's reaction to the first day of high school and why her fears seem more intense than that of others. Analyze why she says, "I am Outcast."
Her first day of high school is awful I think and her fears seem more intense because she has no friends. And she is scared about what might happen. She says she is an Outcast because she has nomore friends. They all stop talking to her.

2. Examine the meanings of the "clans" and the prevalence of high school cliques. Why do we sometimes not like people who are really good at things, like sports, music, art, or school? Is this fair? Are adults like this?
The meanings of clans is like another word for cliques to me. If you act a different way then you be in a different clan. I think we sometimes don't like people because they are better than us in things that we want to do or accomplish. I can say adults are sometimes like that.

3. Discuss the "first ten lies they tell you in high school." Compare with your first day. So you think Melinda's assumption that they are "lies" is valid?
The first ten lies and my first day are kind of the same to me. We had an assembly and it told us like really the first ten lies. Not all of them are lies, so I don't think s her assumption is valid.

4. Examine Melinda's characterization of the teachers. What do these descriptions reflect?
That she like to name her teachers when she first met them.

5. Discuss Mr.Freeman's approach to teaching art. Have you had similar experiences in classes with this type of teaching style?
He like kids to express theirselves. Yes, I have had similar experiences in classes.

6.Discuss Melinda's home life. How does communication break down in Melinda's family? What could each person do to improve it? If you were a parent, how would communication be in your family?
Her home life is awful to me kind of. They barely talk to each other and they dont sit have a regular dinner for Christmas. Sit down and talk to each other or spend time with each other out and about. If i were a parent I would talk to my kids everyday and see how their day went.

7. Discuss the interaction between Melinda and Heather. Are they friends? What brings them together.
They just met each other. I wouldn't say they are friends, just something like associates. What bring them together is neither of them have friends.

8. Are we sometimes different people on the outside than we are inside? How? Why is this true, do you think?
Yes, because we would want to act this way on the inside but on the outside it comes out a different way.
